Increased Mortality of White Americans and a Decline in the Health of Cohorts Born After World War II

I show evidence that recent increases in the mortality of white Americans are rooted in a decline in the health of cohorts born after World War II, relative to the trend for earlier-born cohorts. These cohort health differences are evident by the 1980s, suggesting recent mortality increases have deep roots which predate the opioid epidemic and recent economic distress. I identify the role of cohort health by imposing the impact of age on mortality to follow the log-linear, Gompertz form. This imposition yields the sharp, falsifiable prediction — strongly borne out in the data — that a decline in cohort health will result in changes in the slope of the age-profile of log-mortality at the same cohort in each year.

Labor Market Concentration, Wages, and Job Security in Europe

We leverage administrative linked employer-employee data from six European countries to provide the first comparable cross-country evidence on the impact of labor market concentration on wages and job security. We find strikingly similar and relatively low wage elasticities across countries, but greater elasticities for job security, as measured by contract type. We provide suggestive evidence that the similarity of our wage elasticities and the greater sensitivity of job security to labor market concentration may be explained by the dominance of sector-level collective bargaining.

Discrimination and Daycare Choice: Evidence from a Randomized Survey

We use a randomized survey to study how discrimination affects parenting choices regarding public daycares. We find bias against ethnic minorities among parents who prefer a structured child care institution but not among parents who prefer free play one. These biases are not reduced when we provide additional information on testifiers’ professions. Our findings offer validation for a model of parenting where biases regarding discrimination are likely to come from parents preferring less permissive methods.

How Can Paid Maternity Leave Boost Female Entrepreneurship?

This paper reveals that providing mothers with a higher maternity leave allowance raises their probability of becoming self-employed after childbirth. Using a Regression Kink Design on Belgian data, I estimate that a 900-euro increase in allowance raises the probability of becoming self-employed by six percentage points. The allowance might lift financial constraints, and self-employed mothers might seek flexible work arrangements when they worked in less family-friendly sectors.

This paper examines the effects of failing high school exit exams on adult criminal behavior and economic self-sufficiency. Using linked administrative data, we find that for black students who barely failed the initial exam, adult crime increased by 20 percent compared to those who barely passed. Failing also decreased the likelihood of on-time graduation and increased the odds of reliance on social programs in adulthood for black students.

We find that reintegration programs (self-development, violent behavior, or education) can substantially decrease the probability of future incarceration. Conversely, focused addiction issues programs are not found to affect recidivism. These results suggest that specific rehabilitation programs explain the beneficial effects of incarceration in some contexts.
